How to Avoid VTU Scams in Nigeria: 7 Warning Signs
Published 15 October 2026 · QuickPlug
Online airtime and data services are a convenient way to buy what you need, but fake platforms exist. Learn these seven warning signs.
The seven warning signs
- Prices far below everyone else. If it looks impossible, it usually is.
- No company details. A real service tells you who runs it and how to reach them.
- Payment to a personal account. Be careful if you are asked to send money to an individual instead of a proper payment channel.
- No transaction history. You should be able to see every purchase and its status.
- No refund policy. A failed purchase should return to your wallet.
- Pressure and countdowns. "Only 10 minutes left!" is a classic trick.
- Asking for your PIN or password on chat. Nobody legitimate needs it.
Protect yourself
- Use a strong, unique password and a transaction PIN.
- Never share OTP codes or your PIN with anyone.
- Start with a small amount on any new platform.
- Check that the website address is correct before logging in.
