Phishing Messages in Nigeria: Examples to Watch For
Published 29 October 2026 · QuickPlug
Phishing is when someone pretends to be a trusted person or company so you give them your details or your money. In Nigeria it often arrives by SMS, WhatsApp, a phone call or a link on social media. These are the common patterns to watch for.
1. The fake bank alert
A message says your account will be blocked or that a debit has happened, and asks you to click a link or call a number to "fix" it. Your real bank does not need your PIN, password or full card details through a link. If you are worried, open your bank's own app or call the number on your card.
2. The "free data" or "free airtime" offer
You get a message that says your number has won data or that you can claim a free bundle if you click a link and enter your details. Networks do run promotions, but they announce them in their official apps and through their official channels. Be careful with any offer that asks for your login details.
3. The wrong-transfer story
Someone says they sent money to your account by mistake and asks you to send it back. Always check your own balance in your own app first. Do not rely on an SMS or screenshot, because both can be faked.
4. The urgent family or friend message
A message from "a friend" on a new number asks for urgent money or a favour. Call the person on their known number before sending anything.
5. The job that asks you to pay first
A job or earning offer that wants a fee up front to "activate" your account is a warning sign. Real opportunities do not need you to pay to start.
How to protect yourself
- Do not click links in unexpected messages.
- Never share your PIN, password or one-time code.
- Check the sender and the spelling. Many scam messages have small mistakes.
- Slow down. Scammers rely on urgency.
