NECO vs WAEC vs NABTEB: What Is the Difference?
Published 23 October 2026 · QuickPlug
If you are finishing secondary school or planning to retake an exam, you will hear three names: WAEC, NECO and NABTEB. They all lead to a certificate, but they are not the same thing.
WAEC
WAEC is the West African Examinations Council. It runs the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for several countries in the region, not only Nigeria. Many students sit it in school, and private candidates can register for later sittings.
NECO
NECO is the National Examinations Council, a Nigerian body. It runs the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), also for school and private candidates. NECO is widely used for admission and job applications in Nigeria.
NABTEB
NABTEB is the National Business and Technical Examinations Board. It focuses on technical, vocational and business subjects, such as trades and craft skills, along with some general subjects. It suits students who want a practical or technical route.
Which should you choose?
- For university or polytechnic admission: check your target institution's requirements first. Most accept WAEC and NECO, but some courses ask for specific grades or subjects.
- For a trade or technical career: NABTEB may fit better.
- If you are retaking as a private candidate: look at each body's official calendar and registration dates, since they differ.
Always confirm with the school or employer you are applying to, because requirements can change.
Checking your result
All three bodies release results online, and you usually need your examination number, the exam year and a scratch card or result checker PIN. Only buy PINs from sources you trust, because fake sellers are common during result season.
Quick summary
- WAEC is regional, run across West Africa.
- NECO is Nigerian and widely accepted nationally.
- NABTEB is focused on technical and business subjects.
- Confirm requirements with your target school before you register.
